Everyday Heroes – Dec. 07

Hero • noun (pl. heroes) 1 a person, typically a man, who is admired for their courage or outstanding achievements. 2 the chief male character in a book, play, or film. 3 (in mythology and folklore) a person of superhuman qualities. www.askoxford.com

Heroine • noun 1 a woman admired for her courage or outstanding achievements. 2 the chief female character in a book, play, or film. www.askoxford.com

On etymological transition, the "superhuman qualities" of the hero were denied to heroines. Pity. What does that say to women who exceed the normal boundaries of courage and achievement? And for girls who aspire to do the same? Let’s take a REALITY CHECK:

No phallic hero, no matter what he does to himself
or to another to prove his courage, ever matches
the solitary, existential courage of the woman who gives birth.

In recognition to unsung heroes/heroines, we applaud girls/women overcoming the odds and making a difference:
